Agenda Highlights

Full-Day “T” (Tech) Training
All Center Directors and Administrative Assistants are invited to a special full-day training designed to assist California’s 6 regions become technology-certified by the ASBDC. Scott Daugherty from North Carolina’s acclaimed SBTDC will lead this session.  Scott will discuss the process of becoming “T” certified, how North Carolina integrates its technology services along with other services, and the ASBDC accreditation standards California’s regions must meet in order to reach certification.

Full-Day SBIR/STTR Training
All business consultants are invited to a special full-day training on assisting clients on SBIR/STTR grants (Small Business Innovation and Research/Small Business Technology Transfer and Research).  This training will include an overview of the statewide I-Hub program by Louis Stewart, followed by a jam-packed lineup of topics from presenters Mark Henry, SBIR guru and John Ujvari, Tech Specialist from North Carolina SBTDC.  Topics will include: basics of proposal development, planning for phase I and phase II grants, developing the SBDC SBIR specialist consultant, marketing to potential SBIR clients, etc.

HP and Dun & Bradstreet Offer 2-Part Procurement Intensive
Everyone who attends this year’s conference will participate in two-hour immersion procurement presentation designed specifically for SBDC by HP, Dun & Bradstreet, and Business Matchmaking.  This training will equip attendees with the information small business clients in any industry need to get right on entering the procurement world by selling government agencies and major corporations.  Topics covered will include: certifications and how to get them, finding out what opportunities exist, and legal, accounting and credit/financial considerations.  Presenters include representatives from HP, Dun & Bradstreet, DGS and GSA. All attendees who complete the training will then be invited to a invite-only phase 2 procurement training to take place in September at Hewlett Packard’s campuses!
4-Hour International Trade Certification

Everyone who attends this year’s conference will get the chance to participate in a four-hour immersion international trade presentation designed specifically for SBDC by the folks at  This training will equip attendees with the information clients need for entering the import/export realm.  Participants will learn firsthand how to evaluate a client’s viability in pursuing international trade.  The conversation will also include discussions about credit, helpful (and not-so-helpful) intermediaries, and trade missions.

Longer Breakout Sessions
In past years, we have had a few trainings that just couldn’t fit into a 45 minute breakout and that were so relevant and good that everyone wanted to participate.  Because of this, in 2011 we introduce the idea of “Training Intensives”—sessions over 2 hours in length that we believe are the “best of the best.”  Training Intensives will be offered in the following topics:  Social Media for Clients, Social Media for SBDCs, Procurement, International Trade, Presentation Skills (videotaped practicum), Equity Capital, Lender Update Panel, Non-Traditional Finance, etc.

Scheduled Peer Discussions
You asked for it—time in the agenda to share with each other about what’s working in your centers!  Discussion sessions will be held on the following topics:  Youth Entrepreneurship, Profit Cents, Special Session for Administrative Assistants, a Special Session for folks who do lots of Loan Preparation, Restaurants and Hospitality, Use of Social Media for SBDC.
